Antonio Guterres Affirms China’s Global Initiatives Align with the UN Charter

China’s Global Initiatives Fully Align with the UN Charter UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on Tuesday that the global initiatives proposed by China are fully compatible with the Charter of the United Nations.

“I believe it is very important to emphasize that these global initiatives fully respect multilateralism. They strongly support the UN as the central pillar of multilateral institutions and reflect a firm commitment to international cooperation and the peaceful resolution of conflicts,” Guterres said during a press conference ahead of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, which begins next week.

“These principles (global initiatives) are indeed fully compatible with the UN Charter,” affirmed the UN chief.

In his opening remarks, Guterres noted that nearly 150 heads of state and government will gather in New York for the high-level week, which “offers every opportunity for dialogue and mediation.”

Thousands of leadership meetings will take place, and Guterres himself will hold over 150 bilateral meetings.

“I will use each of these meetings to encourage leaders to reach out, speak directly, bridge divides, reduce risks, and find solutions,” the Secretary-General remarked.

“Let this be a week of solutions”—for peace in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan; for climate action; for responsible innovation; for women and girls through concrete plans for equality; for development financing focused on delivering commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals; and for a stronger United Nations, he hoped.
