Equity and justice are the most important values of the international community, Chinese Premier Li Qiang stated on Friday during the high-level debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his address, Li Qiang emphasized that peace and development are the most fervent shared aspirations across the globe, and that solidarity and cooperation are the most powerful drivers of human progress.
He called for drawing valuable historical lessons as the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of the victory in the anti-fascist world war and the founding of the United Nations.
Mr. Li stressed that China, as a founding member of the United Nations, has always actively participated in global affairs and worked for the benefit of humanity.
Over the years, Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind and launched the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative, sharing China’s wisdom and solutions to navigate global transformations and overcome urgent challenges, Mr. Li said.
The Global Governance Initiative, highlighted at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in early September, underscores the following principles: respecting sovereign equality, adhering to international law, practicing multilateralism, advocating a people-centered approach, and focusing on concrete actions. Mr. Li noted that this initiative offers a meaningful path toward establishing a fairer and more equitable global governance system.
He affirmed that China is ready to work with all parties to take coordinated and effective measures to address concrete issues and promote peace and development worldwide.
The world has entered a new period of turbulence and transformation, with unilateralism and Cold War mentality resurfacing, which significantly undermines international rules and order and disrupts the global system, Li Qiang remarked.
Humanity is once again at a crossroads, he declared.
“Anyone concerned about the global situation might ask: why can’t we humans, who have endured hardships, show greater awareness and rationality, treat each other kindly, and coexist peacefully?” he said.
“How can we, in the face of deplorable incidents such as humanitarian disasters, turn a blind eye to atrocities that blatantly violate equity and justice and remain passive? How can we, confronted with unscrupulous acts of hegemony and intimidation, stay silent and submissive out of fear of power?” Mr. Li asked.
“And how can we allow the passionate dedication of our ancestors who founded the UN to simply fade into the pages of history?” he added.
Quoting a Chinese proverb that says, “Never forget why you started, and you can accomplish your mission,” he stated that the pursuit of peace, progress, and development is the very essence of commemorating past victories and the mission that unites people around the world in a common cause.
“Even though we cannot turn back time and relive the victory, we can certainly create a better future together,” said Mr. Li.
At a time when the world faces interconnected changes and disruptions, the Chinese Premier called on all parties to build peace and ensure common security.
In light of a slow global recovery, he urged revitalizing cooperation and seeking win-win outcomes.
According to him, as diverse civilizations interact and evolve, countries must promote dialogue and mutual learning. To address new challenges, he called for joint efforts to protect our shared home.
Mr. Li concluded that China will always be a staunch defender of global peace and security, a key driver of common global development, an active participant in intercivilizational exchange and mutual learning, and a responsible partner in tackling global challenges.
