Seen from above, the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai—host of the China International Import Expo (CIIE)—resembles a “four-leaf clover,” patiently awaiting guests from around the world.
The 8th edition of the CIIE will be held from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai, continuing its mission to promote global trade and shared opportunities.
This year, the spotlight is on countries of the Global South, recognized as key drivers of the world economy. For the first time, a dedicated sub-forum will be held to strengthen their economic resilience and focus on sustainable agricultural development. Additionally, the “Global Opening Report 2025,” to be released during the Hongqiao Economic Forum, will feature a special chapter titled “Opening Up Boosts Industrialization in the Global South,” offering pathways to reconcile autonomy, technological security, and sustainability.
Special attention is being given to the least developed countries. For the first time, a dedicated space has been created to showcase their products. This initiative, combined with a “zero-tariff” policy for least developed countries that have diplomatic relations with China—as well as 53 African nations—aims to provide better access to the vast Chinese market.
Global SMEs are also at the heart of this year’s agenda. More than 80 foreign trade associations and around 1,500 SMEs from over 50 countries and regions will participate in the expo. To support them, the CIIE has enhanced its digital services and launched a cross-border e-commerce platform to facilitate their integration into the Chinese market.
“Over the past seven years, the CIIE has helped Rwandan chili, Ethiopian coffee, and Nepalese cashmere become household favorites in China,” said Dorothy Tembo, Deputy Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, emphasizing that the CIIE enables SMEs worldwide to benefit from opportunities in the Chinese market.
Data shows that since its inception in November 2018, the first seven editions of the CIIE have showcased around 3,000 new products, technologies, and services, generated over $500 billion in intended purchases, and attracted 23,000 foreign exhibitors.
