Phone Call Between Chinese and German Foreign Ministers: Toward a Strengthened Strategic Partnership

Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Minister, held a phone conversation on Monday with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, at Germany’s request.

According to Mr. Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the key lesson from the development of China-Germany relations lies in mutual respect, the guiding principle of win-win cooperation, and the proper positioning of bilateral ties as a partnership.

For China and Germany—two major economic powers—maintaining healthy and stable bilateral relations serves the interests of both nations, meets the expectations of all parties, and contributes to global peace and stability, he stated.

Mr. Wang emphasized that, given the historical, cultural, and social differences between China and Germany, divergences are inevitable. However, both countries must maintain communication and dialogue, deepen mutual understanding, dispel misunderstandings, and strengthen mutual trust, while avoiding “microphone diplomacy” and unfounded accusations that contradict the facts.

He noted that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for China and concerns its core interests, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He added that the One-China principle is the most important political foundation of China-Germany relations.

Mr. Wang also recalled China’s unconditional support for Germany’s reunification, expressing hope that Germany—having experienced division itself—can fully understand and support China’s efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and oppose any form of “Taiwan independence.”

He called for the establishment of a more stable and sustainable political framework to ensure that bilateral relations remain on the right track.

For his part, Mr. Wadephul emphasized the importance Germany places on its relations with China. He noted that the China-Germany strategic dialogue on diplomacy and security, held during the Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit to Germany in July, was a great success and that both countries had engaged in constructive and fruitful dialogue.

He expressed his desire to visit China as soon as possible for in-depth exchanges on major issues, especially those concerning bilateral relations.

Germany’s position on the One-China principle remains unchanged, Mr. Wadephul stated, adding that Germany is willing to maintain close exchanges and dialogue with China in various fields, manage differences constructively, and advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between Germany and China.

Mr. Wang invited Mr. Wadephul to visit China in the near future.
