China will accelerate the development of a new type of forecasting system in 2026 to improve its ability to predict and issue alerts for extreme weather and climate events, according to a national meteorological work conference that began on Monday.
Chen Zhenlin, Director of the China Meteorological Administration, stated that the country will test a new alert system for imminent events, using artificial intelligence to refine forecasts related to typhoons and heavy rainfall, and will develop new forecasting systems for extreme weather conditions.
Mr. Chen also emphasized that over the past year, China responded effectively to extreme weather disasters by providing early forecasts during the flood season and reducing errors in typhoon trajectory predictions. Meteorological authorities strengthened coordination with other government departments to improve disaster preparedness and resource management.
In 2026, efforts will also focus on accelerating the development of a new meteorological service system for agriculture and on conducting a comprehensive study and zoning of agricultural climate resources, Mr. Chen added. (Source: Xinhua / Photo: VCG)
