China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, on Monday urged UN member states to respect the goals and principles of the UN Charter and to uphold the authority of international rule of law.
During a public debate at the Security Council, Fu Cong emphasized that the international system, with the United Nations at its core and international law as its foundation, is being undermined by unilateralism, power politics, and intimidation.
“More than ever, we must strengthen unity and cooperation, revitalize international rule of law, and strive to realize the vision of peace, security, prosperity, and progress,” Fu stated.
He added that all states should treat each other as equals, respect sovereignty and territorial integrity, commit to resolving disputes peacefully, oppose the use or threat of force in international relations, and adhere to the golden rule of non‑interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
“We do not believe any country has the right to act as the world’s police, nor do we accept that any country can pose as an international judge,” Fu remarked. “The world cannot return to the law of the jungle, where the strong prey on the weak.”
Major powers, he continued, must play a leading role by refraining from double standards or selective application, and must not impose their will on others.
Fu noted that multipolarity and the democratization of international relations are irreversible trends, calling for genuine multilateralism and greater representation and voice for developing countries in global governance.
He stressed that the more complex the international situation becomes, the more important it is to uphold the authority and status of the United Nations. The role of the UN should be strengthened, not weakened.
States should not pick and choose their commitments to the UN, nor bypass the global organization to create alternative mechanisms. The Security Council bears the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and its status and role are irreplaceable, he added.
Fu concluded that China firmly upholds international rule of law and will continue to work with other countries to promote global peace and development.
