The inauguration of the Royal Theatre of Rabat marks a major milestone in Morocco’s cultural development, introducing one of the most significant architectural and artistic projects on the African continent.

Designed by the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, the Royal Theatre of Rabat stands as one of her final and most emblematic works. The building reflects her signature avant-garde approach, characterized by fluid lines and bold geometries that evoke movement and dynamism.

Covering approximately 27,000 square meters, the Royal Theatre is among the largest cultural infrastructures in Africa. The complex includes a main indoor auditorium with approximately 1,800 seats, designed to host major theatrical, operatic, and musical productions, as well as an open-air amphitheatre accommodating up to 7,000 spectators.

This investment symbolizes the cultural and artistic renewal of the Kingdom’s capital and reflects Morocco’s cultural dynamism under the enlightened Leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, through the promotion of contemporary artistic expression and the enhancement of creative capacities.

This unique architectural and urban landmark will elevate Rabat to the rank of major international cultural destinations under the visionary impetus of His Majesty the King, may God glorify Him, and will further strengthen the Kingdom’s vocation as a land of intercultural dialogue, civilizational interaction, and universal values.

Beyond its scale, the project reflects a significant national investment in culture, highlighting Morocco’s commitment to strengthening its creative industries and enhancing its global cultural presence. The theatre is not only a performance venue, but also a symbol of openness, creativity, and dialogue between cultures. It embodies Morocco’s vision of culture as a driver of development and international influence, reinforcing the country’s role as a crossroads between Africa, Europe, and the Arab world.

The inauguration of this major cultural facility, held on 22 April 2026, took place in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Princesses Lalla Khadija, Lalla Meryem and Lalla Hasnaa, alongside Brigitte Macron. This high-level attendance reflects the importance attached to this structuring project and underscores the depth of cultural ties between the Kingdom of Morocco and the French Republic.

Located along the Bouregreg River, in continuity with the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and at the heart of Rabat’s urban development program, the theatre blends seamlessly with the natural and cultural landscape of the Moroccan capital. Its sculptural form, inspired by flowing water and Arabic calligraphy, creates a powerful visual identity that distinguishes it as a new architectural icon.

Equipped with state-of-the-art acoustic and technical facilities, the theatre is conceived as a multifunctional cultural hub capable of hosting a wide range of artistic disciplines, from classical music and opera to contemporary performances and international festivals.

The ceremony brought together prominent figures from the cultural, diplomatic, and artistic spheres, underscoring the international dimension of the event.
