Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday urged the international community to reject any form of unilateral action that bypasses the UN Security Council. This, on the sidelines of a high‑level meeting of the Security Council on ‘Defending the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN‑centered international system,’ which he chaired in New-York. China is holding the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for this month of May 2026.
Asked during a press briefing about China’s proposal to help the Security Council better fulfill its mission, Wang—who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee—stated that the Council remains at the core of the international collective security mechanism and bears the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, despite more than 80 years of changes and challenges. “At the same time, we must admit that in recent years, on major current issues, the Security Council has sometimes been absent. Therefore, to reinvigorate the UN, we must first reinvigorate the Security Council,” Wang told journalists after chairing a high‑level meeting of the Council on defending the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN‑centered international system.
“To achieve this goal, all Security Council members must make peacekeeping their mission, respect the UN Charter, uphold justice, and refrain from acting in their own interests or creating bloc confrontations,” Wang said. “It is important to strengthen the voice of developing countries and small and medium‑sized nations through reforms, particularly by addressing the historical injustice suffered by Africa,” he added. “The international community should unite to reject any form of unilateral action bypassing the Security Council, so that unilateral intimidation finds no echo and no legitimacy,” he said.
