Xi Jinping Emphasizes High‑Quality Urban Renewal During Inspection Tour in Shanghai

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for advancing high‑quality urban renewal during his inspection tour in Shanghai.

Xi, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the need to fully adopt the philosophy of people‑centered urban development.

Urban renewal initiatives, he said, must be carried out thoroughly, carefully, and effectively to continuously strengthen the people’s sense of satisfaction, happiness, and security.

In Huangpu District, Xi visited a residential community where four buildings originally constructed in the 1950s had been renovated and modernized, greatly improving living conditions for residents.

He emphasized that the CPC Central Committee attaches great importance to urban development and is committed to building modernized cities for the people, with the renovation of old residential areas being an important part of this effort.

At the home of a retiree, Xi carefully examined the living conditions and noted that the CPC is devoted to serving the people, adding that only when the people live in peace and contentment can the Party and government feel reassured. He expressed hope that retirees could fully enjoy their retirement and lead even better family lives.

Xi then visited a fresh produce stall in the neighborhood to inspect the supply of fruits and vegetables. He stressed the importance of improving neighborhood governance and building well‑equipped communities with convenient living environments.

During the inspection, Xi also highlighted that China is currently in a critical period of flood control. He urged all local authorities to prepare for worst‑case scenarios and extreme situations, closely monitor rainfall, flooding conditions, and typhoon developments, conduct thorough inspections to identify potential risks, and make sustained efforts in flood prevention, emergency response, and disaster relief to effectively protect people’s lives and property.
