Wang Yi in Croatia: Focus on Economic Cooperation and Strengthening Ties with China

Prepared by: Ina Stašević, Croatia/Europe

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Croatia on October 16 as part of a regional tour that also included Montenegro and Bulgaria. This high-level visit provided an opportunity to discuss further developing bilateral relations, strengthening political dialogue, and creating new avenues for cooperation.

The meetings carry particular significance because Croatia and China will mark the 35th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations in 2027. Discussions between the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi focused on further strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the economy and trade, as well as on current international and foreign policy issues. The two sides exchanged views on topics of mutual interest and explored ways to deepen cooperation in areas that could support economic development and strengthen ties between the two countries.

Special attention has been given to the opportunities created by the recently established Beijing–Bucharest–Zagreb air route. This new connection is not merely a transport link; it also offers an opportunity to bring the two nations closer, foster deeper mutual understanding, and open new prospects for cooperation in the economic, cultural, and tourism sectors. Improved connectivity can also facilitate business contacts, the exchange of experience, and the development of new partnerships.

For Croatia, as an EU member, relations with China offer an opportunity to deepen trade and economic ties while respecting shared European positions and interests. In this context, one might recall Confucius's words: "When people of different paths meet, they can learn from one another." This sentiment captures the spirit of mutual respect, openness, and dialogue essential to building stable, long-term relations. Through sincere exchanges of views, respect for diverse perspectives, and a willingness to cooperate, Croatia and China can cultivate a relationship that supports economic progress, deepens mutual understanding, and strengthens international cooperation.

In a time marked by numerous international challenges, the China-Europe relationship plays an important role in discussions of economic stability, international security, and global development. Strengthening communication and political dialogue can foster more constructive cooperation and help create the conditions to address issues of common interest.

As Confucius wisely observed: "When walking with two other people, you can learn something from each of them." Through dialogue, characterized by mutual respect, open communication, the exchange of experiences, an appreciation for diversity, and the pursuit of shared interestsbr, idges of understanding and trust can be built. This offers China and Europe the opportunity, despite their differences, to contribute to a more peaceful, stable, and prosperous world.

Ahead of an important anniversary of Croatian-Chinese diplomatic relations, the discussions could further spur the development of political, economic, and social ties. Their concrete significance will be reflected primarily in potential agreements and initiatives that will contribute to more intensive exchange, greater economic connectivity, and the long-term development of cooperation between Croatia and China.

During his visit to Croatia, Wang Yi also met with the Croatian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Gordan Grlić Radman, in Zagreb.
